PSAs (Josh)
Overview:
After reading various articles and stories about having exotic animals as pets, the students were given the task of writing a speech arguing whether or not exotic animals should be owned as pets. To spice up their speeches I showed them several public service announcements and had them model their speeches after the PSA’s. We then recorded the PSA’s and posted them online.
Step-by-Step:
1. Watch sample PSA’s:

3. Revise scripts
4. Practice scripts
5. Record PSA’s
Resources Used:
We recorded on cell phones, iPads, and Flip cameras.

BRAINPOP
Anticipatory Set, Grammar, Outlines, Figurative Language (Chris)
BrainPOP has been a fabulous resource for multiple aspects of student learning. We have used it for an anticipatory set to engage the students and grab their attention. Often this would set the pace for entertaining, brief, yet front-loaded instruction for the content being covered. We have also used it to review past material with some of the activities that the website provides. It is helpful for quick checks for understanding using the "Review Quizzes." Usually we did these questions as a game and in groups using personal response systems. Results from these quizzes led us back to BrainPOP for re-teaching and reflection on multiple curricular topics.
BrainPOP is not 100% free, but it has multiple free components which are changed up every so often under each of the different categorical topics. As far as permanently free "stuff", the games on GameUp, (https://www.brainpop.com/games/) are free, teacher resources are free (http://www.brainpop.com/educators/community/), and the rotating content on the following apps (BrainPOP, BrainOP JR, BrainPOP ESL) is also free!
English Language Learners' Application (Megan)
Megan uses the Main Idea BrainPOP video to get students started on writing. She returns to the video and the worksheets consistently throughout the year to touch on topic, main idea, and supporting details. Megan has students view the video, which can be found for free on the BrainPOP Youtube page, and complete the worksheet, which she prints out for students and has up on the screen for whole class viewing. Here is the link for this activity: https://www.brainpop.com/english/writing/mainidea/activity/ In addition, Megan has students fill out the definition sheet and keep it in their journals for the year.
In 6th grade, this was a starting activity before students read different text types about home from the National Geographic text. As a culminating project, students created projects which explained how SFT could be made to feel more like home using a program called Adobe Voice. Here is a link to a student’s work: https://voice.adobe.com/a/R9jk6/ Their topic was the location they wanted to improve. Their main idea was that the location at SFT needed to change to feel more like home. They had to provide three supporting details. Here is the rubric for the project: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-JmiSjFTY7CIblmFTWi4FUF-7y2KLyhIbyrtT4EQMus/edit?usp=sharing
Megan also has a biography/autobiography project she did with 6th grade where the create their own autobiography using Chatterpix. She used the BrainPop video to start, she modeled the creation of a biography using someone else’s picture as well as an autobiography and posted them on YouTube. Then the students did their own. It was a lot of fun!
